Rotated custom fonts with Cufon and Raphael

I recently came across a problem while working on a client site that didn't have a quick obvious solution (at least to me). The design of the site called for their site tagline to be in a custom font (non-web-safe) and the font had to be rotated. Now normally this type of request could be done by creating a graphic and calling it a day. But, the client really wanted to be able to edit this tagline so I decided to use Cufon to do the text replacement and attempt to find a solution for the text rotation in CSS.

*** A little background here for those that don't know, Cufon is a great text replacement tool in javascript. Check it out on github.

So I started to do a little research. I came across an awesome blog post on rotating text with CSS. Check it out here at snook.ca. This was a great start, but of course the solution offered didn't work in IE. Actually.. it did work but only if you wanted to rotate at 90 degree intervals. Sadly, my design called for a -8 degree rotation so I was out of luck with this method. It's too bad too because this could have been all the code I needed

-webkit-transform: rotate(-8deg);
-moz-transform: rotate(-8deg);
-transform: rotate(-8deg);

AND if only this part could have worked!!!
filter: progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.BasicImage(rotation=3);

I won a book - but not just any book!

I won!!

I was lucky enough to win one of the door prizes at the Freelance Camp Vancouver "unconference" yesterday. The prize I won was the book "Make Money Online: Roadmap of a dot com mogul" by John Chow and Michael Kwan. John and Michael were the featured speakers at Freelance Camp. Unfortunately I missed the first half of the talk but luckily it was all recorded by @yulst and you can view the video here

Freelance Camp Vancouver - Twitter Mania!

So "this one time at Freelance Camp", I was told by @iglooqueen and @cecilialu that one of the best things you could do to help network with people is to selflessly try to connect two people. Well I thought I'd take that same idea and expand it a bit and give a little gift back to the Freelance Camp community.

Since the #604FreelanceCamp hash tag was such a great success, that meant that pretty much everyone at the 'unconference' was probably tweeting. So I compiled a list of all the twitter users that used the hashtag.

So without further ado... the TWITTER LIST sorted alphabetically by username. (sorry if it takes a bit to load - asking twitter for data isn't always a fast process)

Full blog entry on my wonderful day at Freelance Camp coming probably tomorrow. (I'm beat!)

SEO For Small Business - Part One

A client recently asked me to take a look at their current SEO company and help them to decide whether or not the service they were paying for was worth the money. So I decided to do a little research about SEO and what exactly some of these companies do. This is a pretty long post so I split it up into two parts. Part two is coming soon :)

First and foremost, SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. What does that mean to small business owners? It means that when people search for certain keywords in Google or Yahoo! or Bing, hopefully your website is included in some of the top listings. It is actually quite an involved process that does not happen overnight, so don't get fooled by any companies that promise top 10 rankings immediately! It just isn't that easy. Here are the main steps to getting your website in the top listings.

  • Site Structure and "Crawlability"
  • Keyword Selection
  • Fresh Content
  • Links, Links, and more Links
  • Social Media Activity
